Position Overview

This role involves installing, troubleshooting, and repairing telecommunications cabling, including coaxial, fiber optic, and UTP cables. Responsibilities include installing support structures, testing cable quality, and splicing copper and fiber optic cables. Reports to the Work Center Supervisor or Site Lead.

Responsibilities

1. Pull telecommunications cabling through various building architectures, including outside plant routes.
2. Operate trenching and heavy equipment as required.
3. Terminate and test Category 5 UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables.
4. Prepare telecommunications rooms for network distribution.
5. Install hardware supporting cable pulls.
6. Test and certify cabling using appropriate tools.
7. Splice and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cables.
8. Maintain cable records and interpret drawings for troubleshooting and upgrades.
9. Work environment includes indoor, outdoor, manholes, and confined spaces.
10. Climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and drive over rough terrain.
11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Active Secret Security Clearance required.
• High school diploma or equivalent; related experience may substitute for education.
• CPR certification (training provided).
• Fiber Optic repair course preferred.
• 5-7 years’ experience in cable, telephone, and LAN installation and repair.

Additional Information

Must satisfy all host country work requirements. The environment involves exposure to insulation, heat, water, heights, and long periods of standing.

• Operate trenching equipment and/or other heavy equipment as outlined in the performance work statement to complete mission requirements.
• Terminate Category 5 UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables at designated work stations and in telecommunication closets and distribution frames.
• Prepare telecommunications rooms/closets in buildings to function as central and secondary distribution nodes for telecommunications cabling networks.
• Install hardware/systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-Hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls.
• Test and certify Category 5 UTP cabling, fiber optic and main feeder cable with ohm meters, toners and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR).
• Splice copper and fiber optic cabling.
• Troubleshoot and correct both copper and fiber optic cable problems for lack of continuity, noise, signal loss and degradation, improper termination, excessive loss and intermittent problems.
• Establish and maintain cable records, use database software such as Remedy to track and control job orders, interpret drawings to troubleshoot, install and make recommendations for new facilities and upgrades.
• Working environment will be 60% indoor, 35% outside, and 5% in manholes and handholds.
• Required to climb ladders, enter confined spaces and drive over rough terrain.
• Some maintenance will expose you to insulation, extreme heat, water, and heights.
• Personnel will also be required to stand for long periods of time.

Installs, troubleshoots and repairs a broad range of telecommunications cabling media to include coaxial, fiber optic, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), main feeder cable (200,400,600 pair etc). Installs cable racks, conduit, panduit, and other support structures for the protection and aesthetics of cables. Tests cable for signal quality, continuity, and availability. Terminates and splices both copper and fiber optic cable. Reports to Work Center Supervisor or Site Lead. You must satisfy all host country requirements to legally work in the host country in order to be qualified for this position.

Responsibilities

Pull telecommunications cabling through a wide variety of building architectures (both permanent and temporary, including tactical) through buried conduit (outside plant) routed between buildings, ceilings, raised floors and cable troths. Operate trenching equipment and/or other heavy equipment as outlined in the performance work statement to complete mission requirements. Terminate Category 5 UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables at designated work stations and in telecommunication closets and distribution frames. Prepare telecommunications rooms/closets in buildings to function as central and secondary distribution nodes for telecommunications cabling networks. Install hardware/systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-Hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls. Test and certify Category 5 UTP cabling, fiber optic and main feeder cable with ohm meters, toners and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR). Splice copper and fiber optic cabling. Troubleshoot and correct both copper and fiber optic cable problems for lack of continuity, noise, signal loss and degradation, improper termination, excessive loss and intermittent problems. Establish and maintain cable records, use database software such as Remedy to track and control job orders, interpret drawings to troubleshoot, install and make recommendations for new facilities and upgrades.
