We are hiring a senior design manager to play a key role making open source software available to the world. Our Design function ensures the experience of the software and infrastructure we build is true to our intentions, and delivers the tools our community and customers need. The Design Manager makes this possible through leadership within, and beyond, our teams.

As a Senior Design Manager, you bring both experience managing design teams and have expertise in a deeply technical domain. This enables you to coach designers in creating tools for developers and cloud engineers, and cross-context to move towards tangible outcomes and lift the quality of their work. You will manage expectations and ensure deadlines are met in a timely manner against your roadmap. The data platform team is a collaborative team that develops a full range of data stores and data technologies, spanning from big data, through NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, and analytics; all the way to structured SQL engines.

What your day will look like

The data platform team is responsible for the automation of data platform operations. This includes ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, and much more; but also provides domain-specific expertise on the actual data system to other teams within Canonical. This role is focused on the creation and automation of features of data platforms, not analysing the data in them.

• Collaborate proactively with a distributed team

As a Tapster you will:

• Build and maintain efficient, scalable, and resilient batch and streaming data pipelines using Python, SQL, and orchestration tools like Apache Airflow or Prefect.
• Design and implement ELT/ETL frameworks across distributed systems integrating structured and unstructured data from multiple source systems (e.g., APIs, logs, databases, cloud services).
• Own data models and transformations within cloud data platforms such as Redshift, BigQuery, or Databricks.

What you will bring to the party:

• 4 - 7 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, working in high-scale, cloud-native environments.
• Proven track record of building and optimizing data pipelines, managing data lakes, and architecting data warehouse solutions in fast-paced technology, fintech, or digital-first organizations.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Deep proficiency in Python for data processing and scripting, and strong command of SQL for analytics and data modeling.
• Experience with Structured and unstructured database systems(RDBMS, NOSQL, Columnary, NewSQL)
